Shouldn’t Somebody Try to Stop Me?

A couple weeks ago I had a crazy idea. I thought that after I retire, in a few years, it would be fun to spend a year driving around the country, staying in a trailer. Never mind that I’ve never pulled a trailer. Never owned a car with more than 4 cylinders.

I mentioned my idea to a friend, kind of like it was a crazy thought, a momentary relapse. Whoa! She thought it sounded like fun. Then I mentioned it to another friend. He thought it was a good idea, too. And another friend agreed. Are all my friends nuts? Do they want me to just get out of town?

Or maybe it is a good idea. At least an idea worth checking into.

I figure there are 3 big questions I have to answer before I join the world of fulltime RVing. (By the way, I didn’t even know there was a term for it until I started investigating. Turns out a lot of people do this. Who knew?)

  1. Can I afford to do it? Given that my job continues (not a guarantee), how much money could I save? How much will I need to get started? How much would life on the road cost?
  2. Can I do it? I’m a single woman, out-of-shape, soon to be senior citizen in generally good health. Can I tow a trailer? Can I hook one up at a campground? What kinds of skills are involved in towing a trailer around the country and living in it? Can I learn them?
  3. Wll I like it? I’m pretty sure I would like it. I’ve lived by myself far away from friends and family for long periods. I don’t need a lot of fancy stuff with me, and I love going to new places, even places that are just ordinary. I’m pretty sure the travelin’ life would suit me fine.

So these are the big questions. Of course, there are tons of little questions. And I’m going to try to find the answers and put them in this blog. Maybe somebody will read it and help me out with some of my questions, especially the ones that seem too stupid to ask. And maybe after I’ve learned some about the fulltimer’s life, other people like me might want to try it. Who knows?

In any case, whatever happens, I figure it will be fun to go back and read these entries, kind of like looking through an old journal.

So, the first question I’m going to investigate is—“What kind of RV should I get?” Join me in my next post to see what I’ve learned
